August - Dress with Less Stress

We're back to a pattern that's easy to dismiss because it looks so small

We're back to a pattern that's easy to dismiss because it looks so small: what happens when you get dressed.

Think about this morning.

How long did it take?

What did you talk yourself out of?

What did you put on because it was easy, not because you wanted to wear it?

This month we're looking at wardrobe stress. Not styling tips. Not a capsule wardrobe challenge. What's actually happening underneath.

Glad you're here!

The Closet Confusion

Four women can stand in front of the exact same closet and freeze for four completely different reasons.

What this looks like across the four signs is different enough that I want to name it plainly.

🌙 If you're an overthinker, you leave your body the second you open the closet. You're already three scenarios ahead, running the tape on what people will think, whether this reads as too much or not enough. Twenty minutes later you're back in the outfit you always wear, and you still aren't sure it was right.

☀️ If you tend to put everyone else first, you dress like you're trying not to be noticed. Not frumpy. Invisible. You've spent so long dressing for other people's comfort that you genuinely don't know what you'd choose if no one else were in the room.

🌊 If you tend to avoid, you have a uniform and you're defending it. Same rotation, every week. You'll tell me you don't care about clothes. What's actually true is the closet became too much to deal with, so you stopped dealing with it.

🪐 If you're a perfectionist or tend to overproduce, getting dressed is one more performance to execute correctly. Polished reads as in control. So on the mornings nothing fits right and you're running late, it costs you more than it should.

Same closet. Four different reasons for standing in front of it feeling stuck.

No styling formula reaches all four of these, because the freeze was never really about the clothes.

It's your specific pattern, hanging on a rack.

Which one are you?

What clients bring into session is rarely about clothes. It's closer to: I don't know who I'm performing for anymore, or I don't trust what I actually want underneath what everyone can see.

Appearance is one of the few places a woman makes a visible, public decision about herself every single day.

That's what makes it such an honest entry point. Not because the outfit matters, but because how we manage what other people see is often the same system running everything else.

The woman who walks in polished, put together, nothing visibly wrong, can be carrying exactly as much as the woman who walks in barely holding it together. Sometimes more.

Looking capable and feeling capable are not the same project, and one has very little to do with the other.

What changes in therapy isn't how you look. It's what's underneath the look, and whose voice built it in the first place.

Yours, or an old one you never agreed to keep listening to.

If that's a thread you want to pull on with real support, I have availability for new clients in Florida and New York. Cindy Ransom, LMFT

Your closet is not a character flaw.

It's a record of every rule you've ever absorbed about how you're allowed to take up space. This month we're going to look at what's actually written on that record, and whether it's still true.
