September - Communication Beyond Autopilot

The conversation you're already having, just not out loud

Communication Beyond Autopilot

September is about communication.

Not the version that shows up in a book title, but the real one.

What happens in the three seconds before you speak.

What you do with your face while someone else is talking.

Whether you're actually in the conversation or just waiting for your turn in it.

Let’s chat more about it. Glad you're here!

The Conversation Autopilot

Four women can be in the exact same conversation and only one of them is actually in it.

🌙 If you're an overthinker, you're drafting the perfect response before you've said a word. You want the question to land exactly right, so you either say nothing while you search for it, or you interrupt yourself mid-sentence because it wasn't quite what you meant. By the time it's your turn to talk, you've already talked yourself out of three versions of it.

☀️ If you tend to put everyone else first, you're a wonderful audience. You ask the right follow-up questions. You remember what they told you last time. And somewhere in that hour, you never get around to being asked back. Not because no one would ask. Because you've gotten so good at deflecting the question that people stop trying.

🌊 If you tend to avoid, you'll take the version of the conversation with the least friction, every time. Small talk, logistics, anything that doesn't require you to actually say something true. You'll tell me you're not a big talker. What's actually true is that real conversation feels like exposure, so you keep it shallow on purpose.

🪐 If you're a perfectionist or tend to overproduce, you're already composing your response while the other person is still mid-sentence. Listening starts to feel like a task you're behind on. So you catch the words and miss the person.

Same conversation. Four different ways of never quite arriving in it.

No communication tip fixes all four of these, because the disconnect was never really about what's being said.

It's your specific pattern, sitting across the table.

Which one are you?

The number one goal I hear in session, especially from couples, is "we want to improve our communication." Almost every time, what they mean is they want to stop fighting about the same thing. What they don't see yet is that not communicating is still communicating. Silence has a message. So does the same three words said the same way, every single time, until they stop meaning anything.

Think about how easily "love ya" on the way out the door gets answered with an automatic "love ya too." You mean it. But the intention behind it got worn smooth somewhere along the way, and the words are just doing their job now, not actually saying anything.

That's the work I love most. Helping someone move past what they're used to saying and get curious about what they actually mean to say, then finding a way to get it across that doesn't require the other person to read their mind.

What changes in therapy isn't the vocabulary. It's whether the words still mean something when they leave your mouth.

If that's a thread you want to pull on with real support, I have availability for new clients in Florida and New York.

Beliza Perez, LMHC, is a therapist in Orlando who has spent years helping kids and parents work through anxiety, anger, and giftedness in a world that never slows down. In 2025 she launched FamGabs, a set of conversation cards built to help families, therapists, and caregivers connect in a way that actually feels good instead of like homework. Her session drops in The Stress Zodiac™ Collective  Thursday, September 24th, and it's a good one, we talked about what happens when overthinking blocks a conversation before it starts, why some people give everything in a conversation except themselves, and how to actually listen instead of just waiting to talk.

If you’ve been wondering, what is the The Stress Zodiac™ Collective I figure first I will clarify what it is not!

It's not a course.

It's not a content library you fall behind on.

It's the place where you actually have access to me and to a room of women doing this work in real time.

Every month brings a live “Sign In” coaching call and Office Hours, both recorded so you can go back and access them anytime, along with tools built around that month's theme.

And when you're deciding whether to come to an event or workshop, members get a discount on that too.

It's not one more thing to keep up with. It's the resource that keeps you connected to me, and to each other, between everything else. All from the comfort of your phone and the Skool app.

New members join at $39/month or $397/year.

The Stress Zodiac Retreat™ still has room! Early bird pricing has closed, but the door hasn't. Three unplugged days in Orlando, November 6-8.

If you're a Collective member and you've been on the fence, you get a special discounted rate on top of that, plus the ongoing support of this community while you get ready for it. Worth a look if the timing's finally right.

Communication isn't about saying the right thing.

It's about actually being present for the conversation you're already in. As a therapist I truly appreciate any opportunity to help my clients improve their communication and understand their stress patterns. More on that all month.

💬 If you'd like to work together — through the Stress Zodiac Collective, coaching, or a therapy session — my inbox is always open.
